Wildfire Risk Reduction Qualification Course and Assessment - Austin

    Registration Link:

The threat wildfire poses to residents of Texas increases everyday as more communities are built in natural areas. Recent fire seasons have seen increasing property loss and death associated with wildfire. We know that it is not a question of if a fire will start, but when.

As professionals who have daily interaction with the public, arborists can reduce wildfire risk and protect lives, homes and landscapes. When homes and their surrounding property are protected, ecosystem benefits at threat from wildfire can be protected as well.

As an ISA Certified Arborist, have you considered how your skills and experience can improve the safety and quality of tree care to protect Texans and ecosystems from wildfire? By taking the Wildfire Risk Assessment Qualification course, you will become more knowledgeable about how to evaluate and mitigate property from the threat wildfire poses.

The Texas A&M Forest Service and Texas Chapter ISA have developed this qualification to introduce you to new terms and principles to incorporate into your arboriculture practice. You will explore how wildfire moves through a landscape and mitigation options you could perform or bring to the attention of your client. This course will be limited to 25 ISA Certified Arborists and we will conduct field exercise on homes near the training center. A written exam and field test will need to be successfully passed to gain the credential. Total course time will be 16 hours, with four hours dedicated to the examination on Thursday afternoon.

    Price is $250.

Limited to 25 students and lunch will be provided both days.

Introducing: Tree Buds Citizen Forester Program

Be part of the 1st Tree Buds Citizen Forester Training Class starting Saturday, March 30th, 2019

Here is an opportunity to receive hands on training on proper tree pruning technique and essential tree care maintenance from professional ISA Certified Arborists.

The Tree Buds citizen forester training program is sponsored by the Alamo Forest Partnership and the San Antonio Arborists Association to teach citizens the basics of proper tree pruning and essential tree care with a primary focus on young and recently planted trees.

Since 2009 the City of San Antonio Parks and Recreation department with the help of many volunteers has planted over 20,000 trees. These young trees have been for the most part properly planted and watered to ensure establishment. However, basic structural pruning has not been completed on a majority of these 20,000 trees.

Here is where the Tree Buds training program comes in. Selected ‘Tree Buds’ will be trained on proper pruning techniques to improve the structure of the young trees and to perform basic tree care maintenance such as ensuring tree root collars are exposed and mulch is properly applied.

Applicants selected to be part of the first Tree Buds class will receive a minimum of 4 hours of training and hands on practice with ISA Certified Arborists. In return trainees will be required to perform 12 hours of community service under the supervision of the Tree Buds program certified arborists within one year at selected city parks and community centers to prune and provide basic tree care for young trees in city parks and public spaces in our communities.

    Get to know Mark:

It is time for the 10th Bilingual Tree Care & Safety Workshop in San Antonio. Learn from tree care leaders Mark Chisolm and Eduardo Medina to take your knowledge and career to new heights.

Keynote speaker Mark Chisolm and Eduardo Medina will conduct ‘Basic Rigging’ and ‘Rigging in Compromised Trees’ indoors. In the field demonstrations will visually show the rigging forces present under load.

Molly Keck will discuss ‘Important Insects of Central Texas’ and Emmett Muennink will demonstrate tree injection equipment that can manage insects and disease.

Conflict resolution is commonly mentioned as a barrier to completing our important work, and we will discuss this topic for the first time this year.

We hope to see you there!

    5th Annual Growing Texas Workshop

    EAB and Biodiversity

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is an exotic invasive insect first discovered in Michigan in 2002. It has spread to 38 states and killed hundreds of millions of ash trees. In Texas, EAB landed in east Texas in 2016 and in Fort Worth in 2018. This insect is an issue that communities will be forced to deal with. Our EAB speaker worked for a city in Michigan and he will provide practical advice for Texas.

The good news is that biodiversity is a great antidote to the alarming spread of exotic forest diseases and insects. Similar exotic pests are Oak Wilt, Dutch Elm Disease and Chestnut Blight.  Our expert speakers on this topic include a plant nursery grower and arboriculture professionals that work for local communities.
